The names of the canals have changed over time as per where they led and their use.
The most important richness is provided by the hydraulic energy to move the mills (flour, cloth, paper, textile, soap and gunpowder mills, etc.). The water was also circulated to dye the cloth and, in the tanneries, to treat leather.
When technology took away the traditional canal use, they were only used to irrigate allotments and fields. The town also grew which led to the canals being buried in many city areas.
At present, the canals stand out thanks to their flora (underwater plants, reeds, rushes and some river trees) and the great variety of fauna.
