Cornellà-Palol-Camós: Heritage and customs
Means of transport: En Cotxe, A Peu
Difficulty: Very easy

Map trail:

The excursions around the towns of Cornellà del Terri, Palol de Revardit and Camós are full of buildings and monuments – examples of the area’s rich cultural heritage.

The most important remains from the past may be seen in a day in these places.

Plaça del Maig: The Plaça del Maig is in the town of Cornellà itself. The space has conserved the municipality’s rural agricultural character where, at present, industry and the service sector have strengthened. For centuries, the Maig tree has been planted in the square and the old Cornut (Cuckold) dance performed – central parts to the town’s festival.

Chapel of Sant Antoni de Cornellà: The small Romanesque chapel of Sant Antoni was the chapel at the now disappeared mediaeval castle. It houses a single nave with a semicircular apse. There is a modern front portico entrance and a belfry crowing the façade.

Church of Sant Esteve and Sords mediaeval bridge: The parish church of Sant Esteve has a Romanesque floor plan but the nave, façade and belfry were renewed in the 18th century. The mediaeval bridge (13th-14th century) may be seen at one of the corners, consisting of three Roman arches.

Church of Sant Cugat and Ravós del Terri castle: The spot has been built on since the 9th century and the church of Sant Cugat documented from the late 11th century. Nevertheless, the oldest features here (the walls and Lombarda arches) date from the 12th century. The rest of the building dates from the 13th century. The murals to the inside of the apse vault are highlights. The castle was built from the 14th century onwards, in the shelter of the church. A large part of the mediaeval structure remains with four cylindrical towers and battlement walls making up a four-sided floor plan with an interior courtyard.

Palol Ice Well: The Palol ice well, dug into the earth as are most of these types of wells, is completely circular. It is in a good state-of-repair and built out of dry stone. The overhanging section is also made out of carefully placed stone and finished with a semi-spherical vault.

Sant Miquel de Palol: The church’s present building is from the first half of the 12th century and is located inside the complex of the old castle. There is a Romanesque apse and a double splay window. The cornice still has some decoration on some points.

Palol Castle: The castle dates from the 11th-12th centuries but saw major refurbishment in the 15th and 16th centuries. It preserves the large main tower and a large part of the fortified enclosure with walls and towers.

Sant Vicenç de Camós: This 12th-century building conserves its original structure to the eastern side. It has a large Romanesque window with casement and a large voussoir entrance.

Santa Magdalena de Noves (Camós). This is another interesting romanesque example in the municipal area. The church is located on top of a hill with marvellous views. It has taken the name of the neighbouring masia farmhouse – Known as Noves- and mentioned in historical documents dating from 1300.
