Most of the eleven municipalities in the Pla de l’Estany are made up of scarcely populated neighbourhoods and small villages which have resisted the population drift towards the area capital of Banyoles and other large urban centres in the region.
Vilert: On the road to Orfes, this village and its neighbouring communities have conserved decent historical and monumental heritage. The church of Santa Maria de Vilert (documented as far back as the 9th century), the chapel of Sant Esteve and Las Caselles tower are highlights.
Orfes: This neighbourhood opens with an exceptionally beautiful tree-lined walk. An image taking us back to other times when entrances to villages and many roads were dominated by groves.
Galliners: The village of Galliners, like Orfes, belongs to the municipality of Vilademuls and maintains the harmony of villages that have managed to unite progress with respect for ancient heritage.
Espasens: The church of Santa Caterina de Espasens is a highlight and was recovered a few years ago thanks to the efforts of local neighbours and inhabitants.
Ollers: The silence and forests seem to preside over this spot where today only a few inhabited masía farmhouses remain. The parish church dates from the second half of the 11th century and still preserves Romanesque elements such as the voussoir doors and ironwork.
Vilavenut: This neighbourhood belongs to the municipality of Fontcoberta and the most standout building is the Romanesque church of Sant Sadurní, although it has suffered many changes in later styles.
La Farrès: La Farrès tower is a highlight in this neighbourhood, also known as Borella tower. It is a notable example of a strong house with a tower and large lounge.
