This route departs from the centre of Banyoles and offers a unique overview of the immediate surrounding areas, both in the municipality of Banyoles and those in neighbouring Porqueres and Fontcoberta.
The trail begins by the Mount of Sant Martirià. There are interesting points here such as the intermittent lake of Playa de Espolla.
Interesting Spots:
Mount of Sant Martirià: This is undoubtedly the vantage point par excellence in the Estany de Bayoles and the surrounding mountains. In addition to the nearby mountains such as Rocacorba, the Virgin Maria del Mont, Bassegoda, the mountains in the Pyrenees region of Ripollès and even El Canigó massif may be seen.
Sant Cristòfol d’Usall: The 12th-century church is located in the heart of a small architectural complex having recently been carefully restored. The large cut travertine ashlars and the tympanum at the entrance are highlights – also seen at other churches in the area.
The Mossoga emergence is nearby and is one of the most important in the intermittent water system of the lake at Playa de Espolla.
Playa de Espolla: This specially curious spot is well worth a visit. The underground water feeding the lake are part of the same lacustrine system in Banyoles and the intermittence is due to its higher altitude (50 metres) with regards to the Estany de Banyoles. It is either empty or full as per the time of year and is 360 metres long and 145 metres wide. Ownership is shared between the municipalities of Fontcoberta and Porqueres as the border runs right in the middle of the lake. At the end of the plain, the outflowing waters from the lake form the equally spectacular Martís waterfalls (Esponellà).
