The village of Esponellà is located on the right bank of the River Fluvià, on a hillside overlooking the river where the old castle stood – the centre of an important barony created at the end of the 14th century. The municipality also conserves a church with Romanesque and Gothic features, as well as a magnificent mediaeval bridge over the River Fluvià spanning 156 metres.
